A byte is a unit of data with eight binary digits that are used in computer systems. A byte is a unit computers use to represent characters such as numbers, letters, and typographic symbols. A byte can also grasp strings of bits that are needed in larger units of application processes (e.g. the stream of bits that makes a visual image for programs that represent images, or the string that makes up the machine code of a software program).

A bit is abbreviated using a large "B", while a byte is abbreviated using a smaller "b". Computer storage is usually measured in multiples to the byte. A 640 MB hard disk can store a nominal 640,000,000 bytes (or megabytes) of data. Exponents of 2 are used to create byte multiples. They are generally expressed as a "rounded" decimal number. Two megabytes, or 2 million bytes, are 2, 097,152 (decimal), bytes.
Issue

A KiloByte was once considered a truly huge amount. Some thought that writing 2 raises to 10 was unwise and could confuse others. 1,024 bytes seemed a bit awkward. The kilobyte was shortened to 1,000 bytes of data to make it easier to use and ignore the remaining 24 Bytes. Many people assume that the Kilobyte is only 1, 000 Bytes of data. However, this is not true. Because binary is not a common language, people without knowledge will not be able to access the additional 24 bytes.
With the introduction of MegaByte (MB), 24 KB became more difficult to ignore, but not enough. It was very difficult to ignore 24 MB storage when GigaByte started to be used. Imagine ignoring 24GB, 24 TB, or more of data.

The Solution
Because it was difficult to ignore this large amount of data, people started calling KB 1024 Bytes, 1GB 1024 MB, and so on. It was too late. People now know that KB is 1, 000 Bytes, not 1, 024 Bytes. The International Electrotechnical Commission and NIST, an American organization, attempted to solve the problem.

It was difficult to make minor modifications to technology because it can lead to major changes in science and technology. In 1998, "kibibyte" (KiB), was adopted to signify 1,024 bytes.
These regulators' actions have not clarified the distinction between the kilobytes and the kibibyte, unfortunately. It is simply too deeply rooted in an international culture that the term "kilobyte", as it is commonly known, has been a problem.

KiloByte
Kilobytes are the smallest unit in memory measurement, but larger than a byte. A Kilobyte is 10 3 or 1,000 bytes, abbreviated as "K" or "KB". It is larger than the MegaByte which has 1, 000, 000 bytes. A kilobyte technically refers to 1, 000 bytes. Kilobytes are therefore often used interchangeably with kibibytes which contain 1, 024 bytes (2 0).
Most commonly, kilobytes are used to determine the file size of small files. A simple text document could contain 10 KB of data, so it would have a file size of 10 kilobytes. Small websites often have graphics that are between 5 and 100 KB. Each file takes up at most four kilobytes.

MegaByte
One megabyte equals 1, 000 KBs. It antecedes gigabyte (GB), the unit of memory measurement. Megabytes are 10 6, or 1, 000,000.00 bytes. This is why it is also abbreviated "MB". Megabytes contain 1, 000, 000 bytes. Therefore, megabytes are sometimes used interchangeably with mebibytes. They each contain 1, 048, 576 bytes (2,).
Megabytes are used to determine the size of large files. A high-resolution JPEG file might be anywhere from 1 to 5 megabytes. A compressed 3-minute song may save around 3MB, while the uncompressed version can take up to 30MB of disk space. Compact Disk's storage capacity is approximately 700-800 MB, while other media drives such as flash drives or hard drives are generally measured in gigabytes and terabytes.
