Coffee without cake and birthday without cake? No.! You really don't have to let these sweet treats pass by your nose, provided you bake them yourself. But what kind of flour is best to bake? And is honey a good substitute for sugar? Dietician Sara van Grootel gives three helpful tips.

Choose your type of flour carefully

Dietician Sara van Grootel: “Use wholewheat flour or (ground) oatmeal, which is high in fiber, fills longer and causes a slower rise in your blood sugar than (wheat) flour. Almond flour is low in carbohydrates and is therefore a great substitute, it does contain a lot of calories. You can make it yourself very easily by grinding unsalted almonds, this is a lot cheaper than store almond flour. Soy bean meal can also be used as a variety.”
