The job of a travel agent sounds like destruction. Yet, in the ocean of the knowledge on the internet, where travel destinations are just a click away, do travel agents even exist?
As it turns out, they do. The work ethic of a travel agent is, of course, a kind of darkness. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the expectation of the number of travel agent jobs in the United States decreased by 12% or 9,500 jobs from 2016-26.
Yet, some people still prefer the personal element of a travel agent, not to mention working for someone instead of doing everything themselves. It is also a potential career path for those looking for something that does not require an expensive education.
So, how to start a travel agent?
Florida is among the five states with registration laws for travel agents because of the reliance on tourism. Although no real Florida travel agent is “licensed,” if you run a business in the state, you must register as a travel dealer, regardless of where your business is.
Firstly, you must apply to become a travel agent to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) and a seller’s Travel Confirmation Bond, unless you are eligible for a discount.
Florida Travel Agent Registration Requirements
To register as a travel agent, fill out the Florida Dealer Travel Registration Form, which includes information about the business, its owner, and its activities. Applicants must purchase a travel guarantee bond from a Florida dealer. The amount of the bond relies on the travel service types you offer. Although it generally counts as below conditions:
1. Travel agents do not offer vacation certificates – $25,000        2. Travel agents offer vacation certificates – $50,000
A seller of travel bail bonds, also known as travel agency bonds, acts as client protection to ensure funds transfer to eligible recipients. In addition, it guarantees that travel agents conduct business under sections 559.926 through 559.939 of the Florida Statutes (Florida Seller of Travel Act). For FDACS, the applicant has to submit the original bond and the visa signature. See Section 559.929 of the Florida Act for more information on bond requirements.
Travel agents pay an annual premium for their bonds, usually 1-10% of the total bond amount based on a travel agent’s eligibility review.
Applicants registered as a travel agent must pay an application fee of 300, and those applying for a holiday certificate require a payment of 100 documents.
An application is to complete providing the following :
Application
Travel Bond Form Florida Dealer
Fees (s) in the form of checks/money orders payable to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services
Certificates of vacation documentation are needed by 559.9295 & 559.932 of Florida Statutes (if offered vacation certificates).
You can create a consumer service account and register online with FDACS. Then, call FDACS at 1-800-435-7352 if you have any questions about the application process. Within around 30 days, they will notify you of any errors in your application or if successfully registered.
The work after becoming a registered travel agent:
The registration must be renewed annually with a 300 fee because it’s valid for one year. Continuing to work with expired registrations, the Law of Florida will take Legal action accordingly.
If you offer a holiday certificate, the annual leave certificate submission fee is an additional $ 100. Travel vendors who provide holiday certificates, wholesale or retail, must submit the required documentation under s. 559.9295, F.S. With a copy of the contract. 559.932, F.S. You may mail these documents to FDACS or renew them online each year.
When advertising or selling to Florida residents, you must include the phrase “Registration No. _______” registered as a Florida State Travel Seller (FIRM NAME) in your contract, advertisement, certificate, and travel document.
Who is exempt from registering as a travel agent in Florida?
Generally, Independent contractors do not need to register in Florida. But, they have a written agreement with the Florida-registered host; or are exempt from registration, do not charge a direct fee from buyers, and cannot issue blank ticket stock or travel documents if independent contractors discount. Those who meet these requirements must pay a 50 percent fee and file an annual rebate statement.
The people under the same ownership and control contracted with the Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) for at least three years are not required to register but must have a statement of exemption issued by the department to obtain a professional license. Travel agents who offer vacation certificates must have a contract with the ARC under the same ownership and control, around five years, to qualify for the discount.
A complete list of discounts is available at s. 559.935 of the Florida Act.
How To Become A Travel Agent
Generally, a high school diploma is a prerequisite before becoming a travel agent, although a relevant bachelor’s degree can certainly offer an advantage over other competitors. In addition, a sales or customer service background degree can also be helpful.
You want to become a travel agent; then, you need to know what you mean when you describe yourself that way.
1. Decide what kind of travel agent to be
There are multiple types of travel agents, and knowing which route you want to take with your carrier can help you better understand what you need to do. It means deciding whether you wish to specialize in a specific region of the world, which means getting better acquainted with cultures and destinations. Are you interested in becoming a travel agent for those trying to be more frugal with their vacation? There is a strong understanding of your budget and finding intelligent deals.
There are also issues with whether you want to be a leisure travel agent or a corporate travel agent. For example, retirement travel agents associated with a travel agent sell vacation packages to individuals, families, or groups is on aside. Besides, corporate travel agents try to finalize travels for attending employees in business and work conferences.
2. Education: Certificate and college degree
Though optional, these educational choices effectively obtain job interviews and gain significant experience before actually entering the field.
About a college degree, one does not need to take the “Travel Agent” bachelor’s program, but a program that shows that you have realized one of the more essential elements of the job. Some college degrees are more directly related, but others may be highly relevant. These majors and programs may include:
Travel
Tourism
Business
Business administration
Economy
Hospitality
Admittedly, four years at university can be quite expensive for these few programs. Many community colleges, technical schools, and vocational schools provide travel planning education.
Also, there are some certification programs for those who have limited experience to gain more. For example, the Travel Institute, which offers education and testing at travel agencies, offers travel agent aptitude tests or TAP tests to test your basic knowledge. It costs 95 to register for the exam. But it provides at the end of many entry-level programs from The Travel Institute.
3. Determine the work environment of your choice and gain experience
Another thing to consider when figuring out your game plan is whether you want to work within a travel agency or take the risk of starting your travel agency. Of course, anyone interested in traveling may be interested in starting their own business with a business degree. Still, newcomers may be more inclined to find somewhere with a support system to develop their skills.
Use the experience you have to get a job or make more profit. Degrees and certificates can go a long way, but what about the actual travel experience? Search your niche before traveling. It helps you gain experience there. Want to be exceptional in any area of the world? Already there is an extensive facility to visit. Be a cruise-specific agent. It would be a great encouragement to mention all your experiences on the cruise ship in an interview.
After entering a real travel agency, gain experience early in your career. Agencies also provide job training for industry-specific items such as computer programs. Here, you only have to do half a high school diploma for a career.
If you want to start your agency as a novice or established agent in the field, you need to research the requirements of your state agencies. For example, if you want to start a travel agency in California, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, or Washington, you need to register.
