Protect Your Guinea Pig from Temperature Changes
As the temperature drops in autumn, especially at night, guinea pigs can be sensitive to the cold. It’s crucial to ensure they stay warm and avoid drafts. If your guinea pig lives outdoors, move them indoors during the colder months. If this isn’t possible, make sure their outdoor enclosure is well-insulated. Use straw or a thick layer of hay to keep them warm, and cover the hutch with a waterproof tarp or blanket to block out wind and rain. For indoor guinea pigs, avoid placing their cage near drafty windows or doors, and check that the temperature remains stable.
Daily Vitamin C is Essential
Guinea pigs, like humans, cannot produce their own vitamin C and must get it daily through their diet. Vitamin C is essential, not just in autumn, but year-round, as a deficiency can lead to serious health problems like scurvy. Add vitamin C-rich vegetables to your guinea pig's diet daily, such as bell peppers and broccoli (the florets not the stems). You should also provide vitamin C supplements in their water or food to ensure they get enough.
