Scientific knowledge advances daily and this brings about new discoveries and inventions by scientists. Scientists had to develop new ways to record their discoveries and observations and compare them with one another. Because different scientists had different methods, different discoveries, and different aims, they came up with different systems. The differences in scientists' way of doing things brought about different scientific approaches to terms, phenomena. The measurement of temperature is a new concept. Early scientists understood the difference between the concept of temperature to be the degree of hotness or coldness of s body, but they had no method to quantify varying degrees of temperature until the seventeenth century.
Temperature is a comparative measurement, accurate scales based on major points of reference must be used. There are Three major common scales used used widely to measure todays temperature: the Fahrenheit (°F) scale, the Celsius (°C) scale, and the Kelvin (K) scale. Each of these scales uses a different set of divisions but can be converted from one to another.
Celsius Temperature Scale
Another name for Celsius is centigrade. This temperature scale was developed in 1742 by a Swedish astronomer known as Anders Celsius. The scale is based on 100 degrees for the boiling point of water and 0 degrees for the freezing point of water. The boiling point is also the upper fixed point, while the freezing point is also referred to as the lower fixed point.
The Fahrenheit Temperature Scale
The Fahrenheit temperature scale was discovered by Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, a German physicist in 1742. Fahrenheit initially made a scale in which the temperature of an ice-water-salt mixture was set at 0 degrees. The temperature of the icing point of water was set at 30 degrees Fahrenheit and the steam point of water was set to be 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Later, he made a change to the value of the ice point of water and increased the value from 30°F to 32°F, thus making the interval between the freezing and boiling points of water to be 180 degrees.
Converting Celsius to Fahrenheit
Mathematical formulas can be used to convert a Celsius scale to a Fahrenheit scale. The formula isn't magic, it's based on the scale and differences of the upper and lower fixed points on both scales. Below is the formula for deducing the equivalent value of °C on the Fahrenheit scale;
(°C* 1.8) + 32 = °F
°C = the value in centigrade, that is the value to be converted.
°F = the converted value.
An example to further clarify this is below;
The temperature of 93°C is equivalent to ___°F??
Simply input the °C value into the mathematical formula as thus;
(93°C*1.8) + 32 = 199.4°F.
Note: the value at which the two Temperature scales are equivalent is -40.
Simply put, -40°C = - 40°F
Analysis of the formula:
If you find it hard to place the values rightly in the formula, simply follow the steps below;
● Begin with the temperature in Celsius (For example: 50°C)
● Multiply this figure by 1.8 (that is, 50°C * 1.8 = 90).
● Add 32 to the result above (that is 90 + 32 = 122°F)
50°C = 122°F
