A rose is a woody perennial flowering plant of the genus Rosa, in the family Rosaceae, or the flower it bears. There are over three hundred species and tens of thousands of cultivars. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing, or trailing, with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles.
Types of Roses
• Prickly Wild Rose
Rosa acicularis (Prickly rose) has small pink to dark red blossoms on a straight, climbing stem with straight thorns and elliptical to oval toothed leaves.
• Prairie Rose
Rosa arkansana or ‘Prairie’ rose also has pink flowers in clusters on a rather straight stem. Thorns are densely prickled on lower stems and the oblong leaves are sharply toothed as well.
• Dog-rose
Rosa canina or ‘Dog’ rose got the name from the old belief that rose hips are offered as protection from mad dog bites. The plant is hardy that it is used as rootstock when grafting roses.
• Multiflora Rose
Rosa multiflora has small leaves and white single flowers usually in sprays. Commonly grown as a fence, this plant is native to Japan and Korea and some areas in the US consider them invasive
How to draw a Rose
1. Choice of pencil: It is a good idea to start with a light pencil such as a 2H or 3H. A dull pencil works best, as it glides across the paper more easily when sketching out basic shapes. Keep your movements fluid and loose throughout this process. After all, a rose is a living thing, and maintaining that idea will guide you during each step.
2. Eraser: Have a kneaded eraser handy for adjustments.
3. Draw the Outline: Draw the basic outline of the bloom. It is not exactly a perfect circle. It just needs to be round. Add a guide indicating the center of the rose.
4. Start with sketching the petals: rose is a bundle of petals that splay out from the center and out. As we move away from the center, the petals open up wider.
5. C’s and D’s: Petals are shaped almost like wide C’s or D’s. Use this alphabetical order to align your sketches.
6. Add more petals sketch to your drawing.
7. Add colors: After the base sketch is complete, start emphasizing the anatomy of the petals. Use a sharpened red pencil to add details and outlines. Like in the sketch phase, start from the center and paint outwards.
8. Create lines: As you rework the sketch, add little touches. Rose petals have bends and grow unevenly. Use a combination of straight and curvy lines to create some character in each petal.
9. Keep adding the colors more.
10. Once you are done, your beautiful drawing is ready.
