How to jump a car

To jump a car means to make the engine start by getting power from the battery of another vehicle, using special cables called jump leads. A jump start, also called a boost, is a method of starting a vehicle that has a discharged or dead battery. There are various causes for a car jump. They are

•    Dirt Fuel Injectors: This is a common and annoying problem that can be responsible for a variety of issues. Dirty injectors can cause your car to lose power and make your car jerk while driving at constant speed or from a stop due to frequent engine misfires. You can also hear as the engine stutters from inconsistent fuel intake. Cleaning the injectors should be done regularly to avoid this problem. Thankfully, this process is quite easy using a fuel injector or fuel system cleaner. However, the injectors can be so fouled up with carbon deposits that even the best fuel injector cleaner may not do the trick. In those cases, you’ll have to either have to take the injectors out to attempt to manually clean or simply replace them.

•    Blocked Catalytic converter: A catalytic converter is responsible for reducing the amount of pollutants that exit out of a car’s exhaust. When the air/fuel mixture in your engine is too rich, a blockage can develop in the catalytic converter over time which disrupts the airflow of the exhaust system.

•    Faulty Mass Air Flow Sensor: If you notice your car surging forward or jerking at high speeds, it may be due to a mass airflow sensor (MAF) that is failing. Its job is to measure the amount of air entering the engine so it can relay this info to the car’s computer.

•    Bad Fuel Pump or Filter: In this case it would be the car’s fuel pump. A failing fuel pump would struggle to keep up with fuel demands and cause your car to jerk or surge forward while driving. Alternatively, you may have a clogged fuel filter that’s restricting the flow of fuel which also can cause issues as fuel delivery is inconsistent. Replacing the fuel filter is a fairly simple and inexpensive process.

The above are a few reasons for car jump. But the main question is how to Jump a car? First you must get someone with a fully charged car battery as yours (12volts), and work with the steps below;

•    Take out your jumper cables: It's a good idea to buy a set of jumper cables and keep them in the trunk compartment. If you don't have jumper cables, you have to find a kind stranger who not only is willing to assist you, but who has jumper cables as well.

•    Park the car with the good battery facing the other vehicle. Make sure that both vehicles are turned off, and that the parking brakes of both vehicles are engaged.

•    Open both hoods and find the batteries. Note that some batteries have plastic hoods covering the terminals, and these will need to be removed in order to jump start the car.

•    Identify the positive and negative terminals, and make sure that they are clean and free of any corrosion.

•    Attach the red clamp to the positive post on the dead battery.
•    Attach the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the battery with the charge.

•    Connect the black clamp to the negative post on the good battery.
•    Attach the other black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the frame of the car with the dead battery.

•    Sure that the clamps are secure, and start the engine of the vehicle with the good battery. Then, start the one with the dead battery.

•    Once you’ve jump-started the car with the dead battery, carefully remove the jumper cables in the reverse order that they were placed on, then shut off the car that was used to help jump-start the dead car.

•    Keep the engine running on the restarted vehicle for at least 10 to 15 minutes to ensure that the battery is fully recharged? Consult your owner’s manual for more information on recommended times.
