How to Keep Guinea Pigs Cool During the Summer or Heat Wave
Summer can be a wonderful time of year, but the high temperatures can be a challenge for our furry friends. Guinea pigs are sensitive to heat and can overheat quickly because they cannot sweat. It is therefore crucial to take extra measures to ensure that they stay comfortable and safe during hot days. Here are some tips for keeping your guinea pigs cool during the summer or a heat wave.
Ideal Temperature for Guinea Pigs
Guinea pigs feel most comfortable at a temperature between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius. When the temperature rises above 25 degrees Celsius, it can already be too hot for guinea pigs and increase the risk of overheating. Temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius are dangerous and can lead to serious health problems or even death.
Provide Shade and Ventilation
Place your guinea pig's cage in a cool, shady spot away from direct sunlight. Ideally, the coop is indoors in a well-ventilated area. If it's too hot outside, bring your guinea pigs inside to protect them from the heat. Make sure there is adequate ventilation, but avoid drafts.
