One of the most popular methods of consuming cannabis is through the use of joints. It is common for people to pass a joint when they are socialising about cannabis consumption. For many people, learning how to roll a collaborative the old-fashioned way is a cultural initiation. Making a cooperative is a highly personal and intricate craft, but even the most inexperienced smoker can create their first joint with a few simple steps. Continue reading to find out more about the art of rolling a joint.
What exactly is a joint?
Joints are cannabis cigarettes that are typically made by hand by a single individual. Prerolls, or joints that have been rolled in-store, are available for purchase at some dispensaries, saving customers a few steps. A spliff is a cannabis joint that contains both cannabis and tobacco, whereas a blunt is a cigar that has been hollowed out and filled with cannabis, both of which are legal in some states. Also possible is to roll cannabis in the same type of heavy, dark tobacco papers used for cigars to create blunts.
What is the proper way to roll a joint?
Grind the cannabis
The flower should be separated and ground-up evenly using a grinder. Using a grinder, you can achieve consistent size and texture, which results in a smoother, more even smoke experience. If you don't have a grinder, you can break up the bud with your fingers instead. Remove any stems or seeds with care, as you want to avoid damaging the cannabis trichomes, and try to make all of the pieces of cannabis the same size or slightly smaller.
Make a crutch
Many smoke shops sell pre-made crutches that can be used to hold a joint in one's mouth while smoking it. While crutches are not required, they can strengthen the mouthpiece and make a joint easier to hold. Crutches also help increase the airflow through a joint, which reduces the likelihood of burning your lips or inhaling tiny bits of marijuana while taking a hit of marijuana.
To make a crutch, start by taking an unbleached piece of thick paper or cardstock and cutting a rectangle-shaped strip about half an inch wide (or 34 inches wide if you're using king-size papers). Make an accordion shape out of the majority of the paper, and then wrap the remaining piece of paper around the accordion part. The use of business cards to make crutches is quite useful. Crutches made of glass or wood are excellent alternatives to paper crutches and can be found in tobacco shops, head shops, and dispensaries.
Crutches are also known as filters or tips in some circles. The term "roach" refers to the last little charred piece of a smoked joint, which some people refer to as "roaches."
Load the joint
Place the rolling paper on the tray so that the adhesive side is facing away from you (see illustration). The crutch should be placed where you want the mouthpiece to be, and then sprinkle marijuana onto the paper in a column that runs parallel to the crutch. Spread the flour evenly throughout the joint, taking care not to overstuff the joint.
To roll a cone joint, start by sprinkling less weed near the mouthpiece and more towards the tip, gradually increasing the amount of weed as you move.
Roll the joint
It's finally time to get things started. Make sure the adhesive-coated side of the paper is facing away from you before picking up the paper containing the cannabis. To make a taco shape, use your thumbs and index fingers to pinch the paper together, sifting the paperback and forth to distribute the bud evenly and pack it down a little. It's fine if a flower falls out; you can re-insert it later if necessary. Work the weed into a cylinder shape that is neither too loose nor too tight so that it burns unevenly nor too tight so that airflow is restricted.
The non-adhesive side of the rolling paper should be tucked over the weed and slowly rolled towards the adhesive side, tucking each bud in as you go. Roll with your thumbs, and support the outside with your index and middle fingers. Start at the mouthpiece end and work your way down to the joint, licking or wetting the sticky adhesive as you go.
It was using a chopstick, pen, or other long, cylindrical object to pack down the cannabis towards the mouthpiece once it has been sealed. This is the stage at which you can replenish any weed that was lost during the rolling process.
