Some individuals believe that sex addiction is not a "true" addiction. "Well, if that's what sex addiction is, then every guy I know is a sex addict," some say dismissively. Sexual addiction, like many other process addictions, is often misunderstood. So, what exactly is sex addiction, and why is it so often misunderstood?

Sex addiction, also known as hypersexual disorder, is a psychiatric condition defined by an obsessive need to participate in sexual behaviour despite negative consequences.

However, symptoms are occasionally present and visible. If a person exhibits any or all of the following symptoms, they may have a sex addiction:

• Constant, obsessive sexual thoughts and desires
• Compulsive sexual encounters with several partners, even strangers
• Lying to cover up activities
• An obsessive desire for sex, even if it interferes with daily life, productivity, and work performance, among other things.
• Unable to control or halt the actions
• Endangering oneself or others as a result of sexual activity
• Having feelings of shame or guilt after having sex
• Suffering from additional bad personal or professional outcomes

Sex Addiction Types

Indeed, the medical community is still split on the subject of sex addiction. Certain organizations, such as the World Health Organization, have already identified it as a separate mental health concern. Others, however, do not. Those who do see it as a sign of a larger issue.

Understanding the type of addiction is one of the most useful sex addiction treatment recommendations. The problem, you see, can manifest itself in a variety of ways, depending on whether it is only a symptom or a standalone obstacle.
