What is an eye twitch?
An eye twitch (or, more precisely, an eyelid twitch) is an involuntary spasm of the eyelids. The majority of eye twitching lasts only a few minutes, although an eyelid twitch might last for days or longer. However, most eye twitches are modest and cannot be detected by others. Myokymia is the medical word for eye twitching.
How can I stop my eyes from twitching?
Determine the various reasons of your eyelid twitching in order to stop it. Minor modifications to your food and lifestyle can sometimes greatly lower your risk of eye twitching or help an eyelid twitch vanish. Let's go over the reasons of eye twitching and potential solutions.
Stress.
The most prevalent reason of eye twitching is most likely stress. Yoga, breathing exercises, spending time with friends or pets, and scheduling extra downtime are all strategies to relieve stress, which may be causing your eyelids to twitch.
Fatigue.
Sleep deprivation, whether caused by stress or another factor, can induce eye twitching. Getting enough sleep and maintaining a consistent sleep routine can assist.
Eye strain.
Particularly digital eye strain caused by excessive use of computers, tablets, and smartphones — is a prominent cause of eyelid twitching. When utilizing digital gadgets, remember the “20-20-20 rule”: Every 20 minutes, look away from your screen and allow your eyes to focus on a distant object (at least 20 feet away) for 20 seconds or longer. This reduces fatigue that may trigger eye twitching.
Caffeine.
Caffeine overdose can cause eye twitching. For a week or two, try cutting back on coffee, tea, and soft drinks (or switching to decaffeinated versions) and see if your eye twitching goes away. If you have eye twitching after drinking beer, wine, or liquor, stop drinking since alcohol intake can cause eyelids to twitch.
Eyes that are dry.
Many people, especially those over the age of 50, suffer from dry eyes. People who use computers, take certain medications (especially antihistamines and some antidepressants), use contact lenses, and drink coffee and/or alcohol are also at risk of dry eyes. Consult your eye doctor if you have a twitching eyelid and your eyes feel gritty or dry.
Nutritional issues.
According to some studies, a shortage of certain dietary nutrients, such as magnesium, might cause eyelid spasms. Although these studies are not definitive, it is probable that this is another source of eye twitching.
If you are concerned that your diet may not be supplying all the nutrients you need for healthy vision, discuss this with your eye doctor before purchasing over-the-counter nutritional supplements.
Allergies.
Itching, swelling, and watery eyes are common symptoms of ocular allergies. When you rub your eyes due of allergy symptoms, histamine is released into your eyelid tissues and tear film, which can cause eye twitching.
Over-the-counter eye solutions meant to relieve allergy symptoms might be beneficial at times, but the antihistamines in these drops can exacerbate dry eyes. If you encounter allergy symptoms and eye twitching, it's advisable to visit an eye doctor to ensure you're doing the appropriate thing for your eyes.
Can Botox help me stop twitching my eyes?
In rare situations, despite identifying potential reasons and implementing recommended therapies, some eye twitching persists. Persistent eyelids twitches can be treated with Botox injections to stop the involuntary muscle contractions in the eyelid that cause the twitching.
When should you see an eye doctor?
If you have chronic eye twitching, sudden changes in look or movement of half your face (including your eyelids), or if both eyelids clamp down so tightly that you can't open your eyes, see an eye doctor right once.
These might be symptoms of a more serious ailment. These relatively uncommon disorders are more visible and severe than typical eye twitching and should be checked by an eye specialist right once.
