How to stop coughing

What does coughing mean?

Coughing is the process that occurs when air is forced out of the lungs through the throat with a short loud sound. Cough is also known as pertussis. It is also a voluntary or involuntary act that clears the throat and breathing passage of foreign particles, microbes, irritants, fluids, and mucus. It is a rapid expulsion
of air from the lungs.

Cough may be divided into two:

1. Acute or short-term cough.
2. Chronic or long-term cough.

Causes of acute cough

1. Flu
2. Common cold.
3. Laryngitis
4. Bronchitis
5. Pneumonia

Causes of chronic cough

1. Smoking
2. Mucus dripping down the throat from the back of the nose.
3. Gastro-esophageal reflux disease [GERD].
4. Asthma
5. Some medications, for example, ACE inhibitors.

How to stop coughing

1. Stay hydrated.
2. Inhale steam.
3. Use a humidifier.
4. Cough drops or lozenges can be used to soothe an irritated throat.
5. Saltwater gargle helps to clear mucus from the throat.
6. Use an extra pillow to elevate your head at night.
7. Do not smoke.
8. Avoid inhaling irritants such as dust perfumes or pollutants.
9. Use honey.
10. Use of menthol.
11. Use of mint which can be taken as a tea and helps loosen mucus in the lungs.
12. Licorice root which acts as an expectorant.
13. Turmeric may help to ease digestive problems and can help if cough is caused by GERD.
