What is nose bleeding?
Nosebleeds which are also called epistaxis refer to the loss of blood from the tissue that lines the inside of the nose. It is very common as some 60% of people will have at least one nosebleed in their lifetime.
Although seeing blood coming out of the nose can be very alarming, most nosebleeds are not serious and can be managed at home. Some however should be checked by the doctor. For example, if a person has
nosebleed frequently, it is advisable to see a doctor.
Types of nosebleeds:
1. Anterior nosebleed; this starts from the front of the nose on the lower part of the wall that separates the two sides of the nose. The capillaries and small blood vessels in this front area of the nose are fragile and can easily break and bleed. This type is common to children and can be treated at home.
2. Posterior nosebleed; this occurs deep inside the nose. This type is caused by larger blood
vessels in the back of the nose near the throat. It can be more serious than an anterior nosebleed.
A person might need medical attention right away as the bleeds can get heavy.
How to stop nose bleeding.
1. Relax
2. Sit upright and lean your body and your head slightly forward. This will keep the blood from running from down your throat.
3. Breathe through your mouth.
4. Use a tissue or damp washcloth to catch the blood.
5. Use the thumb and index finger to pinch together the soft part of your nose. Be sure to pinch the soft part against the hard bony ridge of the nose. At or above the bony part will not put pressure where it can stop the bleeding/
6. Continue this for like 5 minutes, then check if the bleeding has stopped.
7. You can apply an icepack to the bridge of the nose to further help constrict the blood vessels.
8. After bleeding stops, do not bend over, strain, and lift anything heavy. Do not know the nose for several days.
