How to stop running a program

Want to stop a running program and you don't know how to do it? then stay with me and I will guide you on how to do it.

One common feature most programs and applications on operating systems share are the ability to run in the background, enabling you to quickly reopen or relaunch programs after you close them.

If your computer starts running sluggishly, stopping programs from running in the background may free up the resources to get your computer running at normal speed.

To stop a program from running in the background on your computer (especially the windows system), you can use the Windows Task Manager.
The process to access and use the Task Manager is the same in every Windows version.

How to stop running a program

Start Task Manager by either

- Press Control + Shift + Esc
- Right-click on taskbar and select Task Manager from popup menu
- Click Start, select Run..., type taskmgr
- Hit Control + Alt + Del, select Task Manager

Then, in Task Manager's "Processes" list, look for a program you want to stop, select it and click "End Process" in the lower right corner.

Another Method.


Look at the Windows cmd utility called Taskkill. You may pass it the name of the .exe that you want to terminate.

You can create the list of tasks that have to be closed using a batch file as shown below. E.g.:

taskkill /im notepad++.exe
taskkill /im eclipse.exe
taskkill /im outlook.exe
taskkill /im chrome.exe
taskkill /im word.exe
taskkill /im winscp.exe
taskkill /im iexplore.exe
taskkill /im OUTLOOK.exe
taskkill /im WINWORD.exe


Disable in a program’s own settings


Some of the apps that you install on your computer have a built-in setting to enable or disable them from running on startup. Every software is different, but in most cases, you can locate this option in the settings or configuration menu of the program. There are also these programs that don’t have such a setting because most of the operating systems can automatically manage which program to run on startup.

How to stop programs from running at startup – Windows 11


1. Click on Start and Select Settings. In the Settings windows select Apps
2. On the left pane, select Startup
3. When the Startup Apps window pops you can enable or disable, via the radio buttons, the programs you wish to load during the startup of your Windows 11. The elegant thing that Windows did in this version is that it measures the impact on the boot time of each program and you can understand better which of the startup programs is slowing down your system.
