What’s a runny nose?
Mucus is secreted from the nose when you have a runny nose. It can be brought on by cooler outside conditions, as well as the common cold, flu, or allergies. Drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, and sleeping as much as possible are part of the treatment.
To treat congestion caused by cold, dry air, use a saline nasal spray and have a cool-mist humidifier near your bed. The thin, largely clear discharge you may notice is referred to as “rhinorrhea,” a term that is frequently used in conjunction with the phrase “runny nose.”
Another term you may come across is “rhinitis.” The inflammation of your nasal tissues is known as rhinitis. When a cold virus or allergen, such as pollen or dust, first enters your body, it irritates the lining of your nose and sinuses (or air-filled pockets around your face), causing your nose to produce a large amount of clear mucus.
This mucus traps germs, viruses, and allergies and aids in their removal from your nose and sinuses. The mucus may change color to white or yellow after two or three days. The mucus may also develop a greenish tint at times. All of this is normal and does not indicate the presence of an illness.
What role does your nose play in protecting your body?
The process of breathing begins in the nose. Through your nose, air enters your lungs. It aids in filtering, humidifying, warming or cooling.
It filters, humidifies, warms, or cools the air that passes through it, ensuring that the air that enters your lungs is pure.
The space inside your nose is lined with mucosa, or moist tissue, and is home to many mucus-producing glands. Mucus traps germs, allergies, dust, and other hazardous particles that enter the nose. Mucus includes antibodies or enzymes that fight pathogens such as bacteria and viruses.
What is the cause of a runny nose?
One or more of the following factors might be causing your runny nose. Allergies are one possible reason.
