How to Survive a Tornado

Many people have seen storms in movies only and thought that they would never face such a tragedy. But now no one can deny that the weather is changing and hurricanes are beginning to appear in places they have never seen before. If you want to feel safe or live in a storm-prone area you should know some things.

First of all you need to know what to do and what not to do. If you think you have a fast car and you can pass a hurricane, stop and think again. If it decides to go your own way you cannot pass the twister. Also, if the winds are strong enough to lift a car or a van out of the way, you may find yourself in serious trouble. Forget about your car.

Instead, if you see a hurricane coming your way and do not panic, gather your children and head for the basement. if you do not have a basement or some kind of basement with concrete walls try to place them away from the windows as a hallway in the middle of the house. A windowless bathroom is also a good choice. Even a closet away from windows can be a great place. When you have enough time take the mattresses from the beds and use them as shoes. The biggest danger in a tornado situation is not the twister itself or even the strong winds. It's a flying debris. Small pieces of wood, glass and metal can rotate and can cause serious damage. And large fragments can fly at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour. This poses a great danger and you should be aware of that. In severe storms even cars and vans can hit your home, so you should take good precautions.

However, you should not find yourself in a basement without having some basic necessities and living things. You have to imagine that if a hurricane hits, the power will be gone and it can be very dark. Therefore, it is best if you have prepared emergency storage in the basement in advance. Having a light source and a portable radio will be very helpful. Also, preserved food and water will help you if you are trapped under the rubble.

The last tip is: stay indoors. Do not finish as soon as the storm is over. The likelihood of a new hurricane is more likely to occur suddenly and could be catastrophic. Therefore, use a portable radio and wait for the official announcement that the accident is over. So, good luck.
