No living soul spends more time with you than yourself in your lifetime. There is no option to change the characters or features of the very person you are, like in a video game. Whether you accept it or not, “You are yourself!” We often hear the growing herd of influencers or digital gurus rambling about being kind to others. But in the process of projecting an external positive image, do you ensure you are kind to yourself? What is one of the best ways to treat yourself well?

Self-talk - the random things you say to yourself consciously or subconsciously is scientifically proven to impact your mood and confidence levels. Even though you may be the most optimistic person out there, the world outside is often cruel enough to demotivate you and bring your spirits down. That doesn’t mean that you need to talk trash to yourself.

My First Positive Experience

Like most students in high school, I was also feeling nervous while giving my first public exam in the 10th grade. A few weeks prior to the exams, my class had a mind training session with an external coach/counsellor. It was the first time I experienced the raw power of positive self-talk. He taught us a set of breathing exercises and affirmations that we needed to perform during the preparatory and exam days. I followed them to the teeth.

I can confidently say that these mind training exercises made me calmer and more focused during the exam. I ended up achieving second rank in my school. I can proudly say that the role played by those short sessions of positive affirmations, which I performed in solitude, contributed to that milestone from a mental strength standpoint. Among those affirmations, the two magical words the coach taught us that proved revolutionary to my morale and self-esteem - “I can”!

Even after passing out from school and college, brief self-talk sessions make the challenges of life easier to handle. A tiny gesture such as a pat on your back after completing a task that you thought you couldn’t do can create wonders.

Making Self-Talk A Habit

How can you do good to your loved ones and society as a whole when your inner being isn’t feeling its best? Practice the simple yet mighty act of gratitude and motivating self-talk. Make self-talk an integral part of your daily life and notice the difference, just like I did.
