Writing Fantasy: Freedom and Creativity
"So, what have you done on the weekend?" A friendly woman asks me.
"Oh, nothing special. Taking care of the household and doing some writing."
"Writing? Do you write? That's amazing!"
She smiles, and we talk about my writing for a couple of minutes, which I hope will one day become a full-time job.
I started writing before I could read. At age 6, I received my first diary, and I still have it. That book shows how my writing skills improved during the first two years.
In the beginning, there are more drawings than words. Mixed with stickers, of course. But then the words take on a more permanent part.
That's how it all started: with a diary. Then, it developed into short stories. I would send some of them to my favourite magazine.
I remember my excitement the first time they published one of my stories. It was a fantastic feeling, and of course, it made me keep on writing.
It was fun and came very easy for me.
In school, I was no star. Nonetheless, if we had a writing assignment, my teachers would ask me not to overdo it and to keep it to a certain number of pages. They learned rapidly that if they did not put up a limit, I would come up with more than they had time to read.
People often told me to pursue writing, and if real life hadn't gotten in the way, who knows where I'd be now?
If anyone asked me how it all started, I would have to blame Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and, of course, the Fantasy Queen herself, Anne Rice.
I was just a teen when I sneaked out of bed one evening to watch some TV. I saw a film with two vampires living in a world different from mine.
Years later, I saw the same film again, and that time, I managed to learn the title of it: Interview with a Vampire, initially written by Anne Rice.
I remember talking with someone about how different that world was from ours. This person answered with: "It is just a fantasy." I have been writing Fantasy since then, and I still love it.
Writing Fantasy
Being a fantasy writer means freedom. I am free to express myself in ways that are not possible in real life.
It also means freedom of creativity and exploring the limits.
There is nothing like letting go of all the boundaries society has placed on our way of living, thinking, and acting.
In real life, in some situations, I feel like an actress. Because I know what is expected of me to do, but it is not who I am.
But in my writing, I can explore things on my own terms. I can address my thoughts, feelings, and actions regarding myself and those around me. And that feels like freedom for me.
Lay some creativity on top of it. And we have a fantasy novel about love, passion, action, and other crazy things.
After all, In the world of Fantasy, anything is possible.
Greetings Serena
