INXS — Mystify
When INXS released their legendary album in 1987 Kick released, it was full of hits — think “Need You Tonight”, “New Sensation” and “Never Tear Us Apart”. But one song stood out for its sultry charm and subtle groove: “Mystify” . This song, which was released as the album's fifth single in 1989, perfectly shows why INXS was one of the biggest bands of the 80s.
🎶 Musical style
“Mystify” is a laid-back, melodic rock track with pop influences, supported by a smooth rhythm, soulful piano, and Michael Hutchence's signature voice. The production is tight and warm, with a groove bubbling just below the surface. The chorus lingers, thanks in part to the repeated phrase “Mystify me” , which acts as a kind of incantation.
It's less explosive than some of the other tracks on Kick , but that's why it shows the band's versatility. Where other songs on the album are bursting with riffs and energy, “Mystify” shows how powerful subtlety can be.
