If you want to quickly create a beautiful collection, with which you can participate in exhibitions, then buying expensive trees is the quickest option. We will soon talk about tens of thousands of Euro for an old tree and even several hundreds of thousands for a top copy.

But then you are a collector who tries to preserve his trees optimally. The real bonsai artist starts from a cheap starter plant that he may or may not have grown from seed or cuttings himself.

Next to this you can see a Pinus parviflora 'Kinpo' that I bought for a few Euro in the Arboretum of Kalmthout. With an aluminum wire, some movement is placed in the trunk; it can be removed within a few months.
