Jose Encarnación 'Pachencho” Romero


He was the first Venezuelan athlete to win a medal in international competition. Thus, at the II Bolivarian Sports Games of 1947 held in Lima (Peru) the first gold medal in international competition in the athletics category, with a javelin throw of 58.45 meters.

He carried the torch at the VI Bolivarian Games 1970 held in the city of Maracaibo, Venezuela. The nickname “Pachencho” has its origin in a doll by a Colombian ventriloquist who José Romero imitated very gracefully, so much so that he got the name.
