Julius Fucik is known for his Reportage at the Foot of the Gallows, written on strips of toilet paper during his stay in a Nazi prison thanks to the complicity of a policeman, who supplied him with paper and pencil, Adolfo Kolinsky, who belonged to the Czech resistance and being among the ranks of the Germans allowed him to help alleviate the penalties for many prisoners.

On September 8, 1945, Fucik was assassinated after all the humiliations and torture, and all these writings came to his wife Gustina Fucikova, a survivor of the Ravensbrück concentration camp.

Finally, a hopeful book comes to light and is translated into eighty languages. It is a must read for every militant on the left, the story of a communist hero, but far from ideologies it is the literary genius to transmit so many reflections of humanity between love and betrayal.

And the work of this journalist was so inspiring that during the Fourth Congress of the World Organization of Journalists (OIP), held in Bucharest (Romania) in 1958, September 8 was established as International Journalist Day in honor and commemoration of the death of Julius Fucik.
