Hello, dear friends!
Today I decided to write a post about a movie I just watched. It's called "Summer Stock" and it premiered in the year 1950. The movie is in full colour, provided by Technicolor.
The movie begins with Jane Falbury, a young woman who lives on her family farm. She leads an ordinary life in a village in New England. Until one day, her younger sister arrives with her colleagues - a group of actors. The group of actors are looking for a place to perform their latest production. At first, Jane disagrees with allowing the actors to stay, but then she changes her mind as she gives them chores to perform on the farm.
Sparks fly between Jane and the director of the production, Joe Ross, who is also the fiance of Jane's sister. Not to mention that Jane is already engaged and has been for four years.
It does not help that Abigail, Jane's sister, quits the production days before its premiere. Jane is forced to step in and learn her sister's lines. Her solo performance "Get Happy" is a number that I will be talking about more down below because it's an iconic number from this movie.
The two main actors of the movie are Judy Garland and Gene Kelly, who portray the roles of Jane Falbury and Joe Ross. Before watching the movie, I had heard that both of them had worked in movies together and had enjoyed doing so. I was curious to see how they worked in the movie and I was pleasantly surprised with the chemistry between the two characters. The romantic scenes between Jane and Joe had me asking for more.
One of the most impressive performances in the movie, in my opinion, was "Get Happy", performed towards the very end of the movie. I had seen clips from the performance before watching the movie and "Get Happy" is one of my most favourite songs performed by Judy Garland. In spite of that, it was still magical to rewatch this exact performance. The performance itself is with a simple choreography but that is exactly what makes it beautiful.
I adored Gene Kelly's tap dance routines. I think he has to be the most impressive tap dancer I've seen in my entire life. He makes tap dancing seem effortless, almost like flying. He and Judy were great dance partners.
Overall, the movie "Summer Stock" is a great movie for fans of musicals, romance, older movies and especially movies about farm life, the so-called "cottagecore" aesthetic.
