Electricity, the least sexy way to save, at least that's what I think. The word alone is too technical for me, actually. But since I had a house full of electrical appliances and the electricity bill didn't always make me happy, I was forced to delve into this. I didn't want to let the little money I had flow through the power cables.

Often you don't even realize that you're consuming electricity. The waste costs relatively little money, but it is better to prevent it if you want or need to save, plus that this also makes you environmentally friendly, not entirely unimportant.

NB. addition 2022: The situation has changed for many people and more people may now come into contact with having to cut back for the first time. The energy crisis is now affecting everyone and we don't have much in control, but remember that there are always things you can take control of. Doing something also gives you the feeling that you can take control of it yourself and gives a less dependent feeling than doing nothing. We'll get through it, eventually. As with everything: little bits help too.

The following are some tips for cuts that you should be able to see back at the end of the year when you get the settlement:

1. Take advantage of a double rate. Some power providers have a daily and nightly rate. It is much cheaper to run certain appliances at night, for example, a washing machine, dryer or dishwasher. On the internet, you can find and calculate how much you can save.

2. Don't leave electronic equipment on standby, turn it off. Devices that are in “standby” mode also use power. This consumption is also known as slump power. Televisions, for example, are power consumers, and who turns off their computer?Chargers are also large power consumers, as long as they are plugged in, power is supplied to the transformer. It doesn't matter if they are connected to a device. In addition, it is also the case that leaving devices on standby is a fire hazard. By the way, did you know that there is a standby killer for sale This killer disables the standby mode of devices. When devices are charged, unplug the charger immediately. Consistently switching off (unplugging) all devices with a standby function, for example, quickly saves an average household between 25 and 70 euros per year! 3. Lower the thermostat a degree and put on a warm sweater instead. A thicker sweater or cardigan quickly saves 1 to 2 degrees of firing. You seem to save 25 euros on an annual basis and if you then set the thermostat to 15 degrees an hour before sleep, you save another 40 euros a year. Closing curtains in the evening also saves heat. Don't forget to turn the thermostat down an hour before you go to bed. The room stays warm for so long, but you don't smoke anything. 4. In addition to ambient light, candles also give off a bit of warmth. Saves heating costs again and one less light can turn on again. You can also make your own candles with leftover candles. Ask friends and family to give the stubs and make them yourself. It doesn't cost you anything like this and it's also a lot of fun to do.
