Although it seems to us now that it is something of another era, the truth is that apartheid (racial segregation in South Africa) was in force until 1992, that is, until yesterday.
Apartheid basically consisted of creating differentiated spaces (educational, leisure..) for blacks and whites. In addition, blacks had limited access to education, could not travel freely around the country and only whites could vote (all in a country with 91 per cent black population).
The last time only white people voted was in a referendum in 1992, which empowered then-President Frederik de Klerk to advance the repeal of segregationist laws.
He succeeded him as President Nelson Mandela, following the first free elections held in the country in 1994. Both received numerous international awards for their work to end the apartheid regime. De Klerk is now 80 years old and is retired.
