About this tango:

The author is Gerardo Hernán Matos Rodríguez. Matos Rodríguez wrote it as a university student in Montevideo in 1914 (according to other sources, for Carnival 1916). In its original version it was a small (and as yet unnamed) march dedicated to the student cumparsa, a group in which the author was a member at the time: hence the name of this tango later emerged. In 1916 the famous Argentine pianist Roberto Firpo performed with his orchestra at La Giralda cafe in the capital of Uruguay, to whom Matos Rodriguez through his comrades passed the notes. It was in this cafe in September 1916 (however, sometimes a later date is given - 19 April 1917) that the Cumparsita, which later became famous, was heard for the first time.
