The medina is the historical or traditional city of Tunis. It was founded in 698 around the initial core of the Zitouna mosque (mosquée Zitouna). Some 700 monuments, with Andalusian and oriental influences, including palaces, mosques, mausoleums, madrasas and fountains, testify to this remarkable past.
