With great pride I present to you my latest creature, “The Stone in your Pocket”, a book that I care about infinitely because it is one of those things that make me who I am.
The text is loosely based on the life of Emily Brontë and her imperishable novel “Wuthering Heights.”
It is not yet another biography, here is Emily who, now a spirit on the moor like Cathy and her Heathcliff, remembers her life and relives the novel.
In addition to the immortal beauty of the book written by the most mysterious and solitary of the Brontë sisters, what strikes me is the atmosphere of death that has accompanied this tragic family, starting from the place where the brothers grew up, surrounded by gloomy tombstones, up to the dramatic facts that snatched them from the world in their prime, one after another.
What is so overwhelming about Emily’s novel?
A book with no escape, no redemption, where death is not a defeat or a punishment but a prize. They do not go to heaven, these two, nor to hell, they go to a place — the moor — to which they both belong; they find each other again, they merge again, they become again the person that fate had divided. Not immoral but premoral characters, they act like the atmospheric elements, like a river that comes out of its bed or an earthquake that shakes the foundations of the earth. It doesn’t matter how many victims they leave on the way, they have to do what they do, that is, love each other, bite each other, merge.
Neither biography nor rewriting, therefore, as always, I only talked about what I like immensely and what I know, reliving it inside me.
“Together again, in the snow and on the flowery meadows, on the moor that is their home.
Heathcliff and Cathy have found each other again, walking side by side, cloaks billowing over their shoulders, fingers brushing, no longer cruel, no longer mean but not good either, just satisfied with each other.
Not far away, on the sidelines, there is a woman with her dog, a wild beast that looks docile towards her mistress. She is a woman with long arms and a wide stride, wild and indomitable eyes. Birds of prey fly over her head, larks alight on her hand, rodents crawl around her old booted feet. Heathcliff and Cathy know that she is the one who made them, as if she were their mother.”
