Learned helplessnes


  1. In the February 1972 Annual Review of Medicine, psychologist Martin Seligman placed dogs in a box where they were repeatedly shocked at random intervals.
  2. Then he placed them in a similar box where they could easily escape the shock.
  3. However, they did not actually try to escape; they simply lay down and waited for the shocks to stop !
  4. On the other hand, dogs who were never shocked would quickly jump out of the box.
  5. Learned helplessness can be overcome when animals or people see that their actions can make a difference, that they aren’t actually helpless.

What an animal executioner, I think, to shock dogs as an experiment.
I sometimes see learned helplessness in my classroom practice, with children whose parents do just about 'everything' for them. For example, I once had a 10-year-old, who couldn't “wipe” his own ass at home. He called out his mother. Well, I never wiped that boy's ass at school !

I see learned helplessness come by more often. Wherever I think it has to do with uncertainty/unfamiliarity with things, such as devices. But also with “ease serves man.” And with, when I ask for help, someone comes byagain/loneliness. Learned helplessness can have multiple causes.
