Insects are there in a lot of places around the world. And as many as forty percent of all insects that have ever been described are beetles. So it's about time to look for a beetle in the Leijpark too.? As expected, we do not have to search for very long.
Just this: the word beetle hits its jaws and means as much as: the gnawing animal. And nothing is more striking: a beetle is gnawing all day long.
We find a small green beetle on the leaves of the knight sorrel. Logical because this is the Green sorrel. The beetle we found is very clearly a female. We see a clod of yellow eggs that a green sorrel has deposited on the bottom of the leaf, but these are laid there by a different beetle than our specimen. We can see this from her green cover shields that seem too small for her fat body, and that is true. Normally, the shields fit on her back, but not when she is full of eggs. Then the convex tummy comes out and her fitting suit turns into a position dress for beetles.
The Green Sorrel Rooster is completely dependent on sorrel, whether it is field sorrel, knight sorrel or sheep acidification. The larvae eat nothing but the leaves of sorrel and will eat them so far that there is often only a skeleton left. If there is a lot of sorrel somewhere, it can literally be crawling with sorrel. That may seem like a plague, but sorrel grows in many places and restores. Furthermore, these beetles do not cause any problems, although it seems as exciting when you find no less than three thousand beetles on one square meter!
The alternative name for this beetle is Green bladder belly and we now know why. That package of yellow eggs, it's not just that.. The female then lays a package of forty eggs, but she makes new ones again and she can do this about thirty-five times. That's a sloppy fifteen hundred eggs from just one Green sorrel rooster. And the larvae that come out must all eat and all of them will go “to the sorting”.
There are experiments that try to show that the Green Sorrel Rooster can be successfully used to combat sorrel, but for the time being there is no conclusive. As already mentioned: very rarely the sorrel will die from the beetle's voracious. However, the plant produces fewer seeds and can cause damage to the root. But that, of course, is not enough.
If you are going to find the Green Sorrel Rooster yourself, you can check the sorrel in the Leijpark, it grows in many places. Those who search well among the leaves will also find tiny green beetles. These are the males. They have no belly, of course not, and live peacefully among the females. A beautiful beetle that Green sorrel, one of the many beetles that can be found in the park. It is not unthinkable that we will soon come up with another beetle. There are simply too many to dwell on just one.
