We all know it, it gives flavor to our dishes and some of us even pee it: vinegar. We usually make this out of wine; it's a matter of bringing oxygen to it, adding a bacterium to it and that's how wine vinegar is created. Vinegar is much more to make, we know, among other things, nut vinegar, apple cider vinegar, herbal vinegar, balsamic vinegar, rice vinegar and tomato vinegar. Those who prefer to be lazy than tired and do not plan to go through the normal production process of vinegar, you can go to the Leijpark. That's where we find the Azijnboom.
Let's go to North America. There we can already find the tree in writings from the early 17th century. The Azijntree, also known as velvet tree because the fruit panicles and leaves are velvety hairy, is a usurer there that can grow up to ten meters high. Here in the Leijpark, about three meters will be the maximum height.
We found the Vinegar tree attractive as an ornamental tree and in many a garden this eye-catcher has therefore ended up.
The flowering is characteristic; large crimson plumes characterize the Vinegar tree and it is the fruits that grow in it that are squeezed into vinegar in Asian countries. We know these fruits under the name “sumac”. The word “Sumac” is a Semitic word and means “crimson”, so they refer again to the color of the fruit plumes. In countries such as Turkey and Syria, the Azijnboom belongs to the food industry. With bunches at the same time, the fruits are harvested, dried and ground into powder. Sumac often comes on the market as a herb, but in fact it does not come from an herb, as many other powders are.
The Azijnboom is an important nectar supplier for honey bees. From June, as the tree begins to bloom, it is a jewel of the deep red panicles.
The great thing about the Azijntree is that its leaves form a large screen, which act as a natural parasol. In America, the tree fills up bald spots in the forest, which are therefore overshadowed quite quickly.
When it gets hot in the Leijpark in the summer, look up the Azijnboom and go read a book in its shade. Above you, the buzz of industrious bees and a world of peace will open up for you. Because that is the Leijpark; in addition to a place where you can search for wonderful life forms in every season, the Leijpark is also an oasis of peace. You have to know the spots for a while, but once found it is good to stay there: under the Azijntree one really sits on velvet.
