In our search for beautiful gardens, combined with our ability to build feed and craft, we, the people, have in the past (and now) scoured all sorts of land in the world to find the most beautiful plants. And we have transferred them to our regions, often as a seed, in a large amount of time. What we thought too little at the time was the fact that plants can wilder. Certainly plants that come from regions where temperatures correspond to those in our areas, first of all do well in our gardens, but after that, once their seeds are taken by the animals or the elements, these plants also do great in our nature. There may be the phenomenon of 'flora forgery '. The plants are not native and sometimes pose a threat to plants (and sometimes insects) that do occur naturally here. A fine example of flora forgery is found in the Leijpark. I use the term 'beautiful' because there are no harmful effects on our native nature. I'm talking about a scion from the large geranium family: the Bosooievaarsbek.
This magnificent plant with its dark pink flowers (the colour of the flowers can vary from red-purple, to pink and sometimes even white) in a real eye-catcher. She is a perennial plant that can reach about half a meter high. For Leijpark, the plant is a blessing; it attracts all kinds of bees and butterflies. She is not completely invulnerable, as she sometimes suffers from mildew. Mildew is a thin layer of fungus that deposits on the leaves. This is not harmless to the Bosooievaarsbek. The fungus causes the loss of leaves and sometimes the plant may even die of the 'white sickness' (mildew degradation). In case of mildew infestation, so-called fungal fluff forms on the upper side of the leaves. A fungal attack is also possible at the underside of the leaf. This is what we call downy mildew.
The Bosooievaarsbek happily participates in the colourful palette of colours that autumn presents us. Her leaves turn beautifully red as temperatures drop. Given her origins, Central Europe and the Himalayas, she can handle extremely low temperatures easily; minus twenty doesn't get her to her knees yet. In her country of origin, it grows in the mountains where the rains and winds flog the mountain walls, and the sun and the cold alternate rapidly. That's why, besides her appearance, she is so popular in ornamental gardens. The Bosooievaarsbek holds up. Now that she has been wilded in some places, she is rooting in new lands firmly.
The Leijpark has an exotic, which does not stand in the way of anyone. Blues, butterflies and big heads just like to see her appear. And so do us because say for yourself: Is it not a picture?
