The Leijpark has many facets. During the day, when we get there, we see and hear a lot of things grow, flourish and move. Many species of animals and plants are admired; sometimes all the time, sometimes they are just a patch that we catch a glimpse of.
However, we don't get much of it (and that's almost no different) is the night life in the Leijpark. During the day, I don't know how many animals hidden in the canopy, between the grass and in the litter layer. They wait for nothing but the night. Then they live up and start their escapades of love or just eat. An important group living in the dark is formed by the moths.
N.B. There has been a discussion about the moth versus the butterfly. Allow me to give an explanation that hopefully stays once and for all:
Not every butterfly is a moth. Every moth is a butterfly. And: the words moth and moth mean the same. So every moth is a moth, and so every moth is also a butterfly. Although among the moths (read: moths) there are very primitive butterflies that do not resemble the image we have in the word 'butterflies', they remain a member of the butterfly family.
Hopefully it's clear now.
A moth that is actually only active at night is the Brown grey band tensioner. During the day we don't have to expect her on the wings, but can be confident that she's hiding somewhere, among the lover of the willow or poplar. These are exactly the trees that her caterpillars feed on. In the night, the butterflies look for nectar of flowers and herbs that bloom at night, such as daisies and wild marjoram, both in the Leijpark.
The question now is: how do we make sure we get to see such butterflies after all?? Do we have to jerk at each branch hoping that a horrified butterfly will whirl out?? The answer obviously is: No. We don't want to interfere with animals, and that's exactly what we do when we actively investigate their environment. In addition, there are places at the top of the crown layer where we can never reach, or a daredevil has to dare to climb into a thirty metre high poplar in the middle of the night. A strong fencing, I can press you to the heart. And do you know?? There's no need to look for yourself either. After all, the Leijpark has the designated man, for years, who makes visible to you and me what else would remain hidden: Henk de Winter. I was allowed to meet this really passionate man for the first time a few years ago. A man who can walk along the same tree a hundred times and sees something different in it.
A man who can photograph the sunrise, reflected in the smallest pool of water held between two tree roots. A man who can photograph the thickest tree trunk, while Leijpark's smallest spider weaves a gossamer thread around it. A man who captures both wideliness and detail seamlessly. Because of its lens, the morrow actually holds gold in its mouth and the dewdrops become pearls and diamonds. And Henk de Winter has succeeded again (who had doubts??) to make the night life a little more visible to us; it is precisely up to him that the Brown grey band tensioner showed itself. Volatile, straight from the shadow world but clear.
We should be a little proud of the fact that the Leijpark is such a passionate detective nose rich. That's why with this: Henk, thanks. Not only for all the beauty you've given us so far, but certainly for everything that's going to come. We're eagerly looking forward to it.
