Leijpark 013 Oystercatcher

One bird that we now (fortunately) often see in the Leijpark is the Oystercatcher. This wader (who, by the way, does not eat plaice and is not a magpie) was originally a coastal bird, but is increasingly found inland in the summer. This was a good plan, when the fields were still full of piers and the field full of flowers, attracting all kinds of insects; food for their young. But now that agriculture is intensifying, nests are being cut down, the field flowers disappeared because they are sprayed away with agricultural toxins, their young are running out of food and the mussel banks are overfishing on the coast in ao. the Wadden Sea Region. Their numbers have fallen by more than sixty percent!
2023 has been declared the year of the Oystercatcher, hoping to protect this beautiful bird. This means that there must be nutrient-rich places, places where many flowers that attract insects still bloom. One such place is the Leijpark. And there are indications that pairs of oystercatchers are looking for a suitable place to breed in the park. The Oystercatcher's nest is nothing more than a dimple in a layer of rocks. Tilburg has many sheds with gravel roofs; ideal for the Oystercatcher! Buildings such as Zjuu, Villa de Leij and also the Leyhoeve (all buildings centered around the Leijpark) can include gravel roofs in their construction. Create opportunities for the Oystercatcher to nest near the Leijpark. And what about the Elisabeth - Two Cities Hospital? That complex is being completely overhauled. Here are golden opportunities for the Oystercatcher and her survival. Then, however, the will must be there. A flat roof is so filled with gravel, that's not the problem. Green business is the new way of doing business. How nice would it be if we Tilburgers, with the united forces of entrepreneurs who also think about nature, could offer this ailing bird a safe haven again? So: Come on entrepreneurs, the time for muscle ball language has ended, now is the time to put their words to action! Who dares?
