Have you ever looked at a cock? And more precisely: the way a cock walks? Normally, there is no difference with the walk of chickens, but a rooster also knows the so-called hanentred. If it shows this behavior, the little dog lifts one leg very high, bends her forward and puts it back down as far as possible. It's like the animal wants to keep the leg off, as if it's not easy to lean on it.
With a rooster, this behavior is still quite normal, but there are more animals that can exhibit this behavior and then we are talking about a neurological disorder. Dogs, but also especially horses can suffer from hanentred. They lift the hind legs or in the case of horses: hind legs involuntarily high. The legs seem cramped. If the hind legs show this behavior for a longer period of time, the horses will stumble, with all the unpleasant consequences that result.
But: how does a horse actually get hanentred?
To answer that, we have to go to the Leijpark. That is where the culprit of this extremely unpleasant condition grows and blooms: the Piglet.
Piglet's wort came to its name in two ways:
1. The leaf rosette (the unfolded leaves that lie on the ground) resemble the skin of a piglet.
2. The herb grows where pigs dig into the ground. Because her leaves are flat on the ground, pigs (which do not graze but really wow the ground) are almost the only animals that can eat the whole plant with root and already.
The strange thing is that hanentred can also act in humans, but not as a result of eating piglet. Someone with a so-called flapping foot (the forefoot is not lifted properly while walking and claps to the floor) shows hanentred; he or she lifts the leg extra high to get the foot off the ground. Here it's a correction, not a neurological disorder.
We still don't know why piglets are so harmful to horses and at the same time not for humans. It is thought that the Piglet wort produces repellents in extreme conditions such as drought or insect attacks and that it is precisely these substances that can be so detrimental to horses. In dogs, the cause seems to be entirely in the nervous system and there is no connection with piglets.
In the Leijpark, the nectar of the Piglets mainly serves as a food source for the various types of sand bees. Useful and with a beautiful flower. In the Leijpark there are no horses (or rarely anyway) and the intake of the Piglet does not always cause problems. That's how we see again: there's still so much we don't know. But precisely in uncovering new secrets over and over again, we remain the front, with a lot of enthusiasm.
