When I say 'Redbeard', the comic lovers of you will almost immediately think of the 1960s comic series about the pirate of the same name, who, together with his adopted son Erik, made the seven seas unsafe. A piece of youth sentiment. The people who are more concerned with history may think of Operation Barbarossa (Redbeard); the codename of Germany's 1941 attack on the Soviet Union. Named after Frederick, the First to be nicknamed Barbarossa and was king of Germany in the 12th century.
Hardly anyone thinks about the Leijpark by the name 'Redbeard'. And yet the Leijpark also has its own Redbeard. Not a pirate, not a king, but a prey fly: The Redbeard Drowflies.
This prey fly is called that because it has ruddy hairs at the bottom of its head.
We've seen a predator fly before during our story series, the forest edge predatory fly. it was mainly targeting dragonflies, while the Redbeard Prey Fly goes smaller for a buddy: it specialises in catching damselfly. Dragonflies go too fast for him.
Robberflies are often mistaken for hornets. Now let's get that misunderstanding out of the world once and for all. Prey flies are harmless to humans. They can't bite us or stab us. Real hornets are not dangerous to us either, with the exception of one species. Hornets can't stick or bite either, but that one species can crawl in like larva, through an opening in our skin caused by a mosquito bite, and then eat our flesh on it; a hornacious thought.
The plague is that hornets are often called hornets (just like the predatory flies) and horseflies are difficult and can bite hard. Whoever gets bitten by a faas gets an open bleeding wound. That blood, that's what the crap is out and the insect will suck it up, as long as you don't knock her away.
The Redbeard Drowfly is not a hornet, nor a faas, but a fly washed out of the clods. With his suction muzzle, it can only prick other insects and suck out.
The Redbeard Drowfly lives in Europe, but also in Asia and Japan. German Redbeard Drowflies do not have to make an attempt to conquer Russia; the species is already naturally occurring.
It's a beautiful rover, made for flying, streamlined and a fierce hunter. Just stand up to outthe extremely agile, high-speed damselfly damselflies. The Redbeard Drowfly does not turn his hand (read: six legs) in front of it.
