Almost every one of us has walked or driven by a golf course and some of us have even played the game of golf. To the layman, a golf course looks like rolling grass or not, with flags on it and large pits full of sand and here and there a pond. But those who are more consecrated know one thing: a golf course is higher mathematics.
Each part of the course is sown with a wide variety of grasses with different qualities so that the different playing methods needed to play the game in a good way are actually possible. Time to hit a ball, please join us?
On the driving range, where we practice the wave, English ryegrass and fieldbeam grass grows. These grasses have a high load capacity and a high restorative capacity. That is necessary, because the driving range is of course used intensively.
On the tee, the exit point of the hole, we find fieldbeam grass but also redfescue. These grasses also have a strong restorative ability but are also resistant to diseases. Then we go to the fairway, the short cut grass from the tee to the hole, there we find redfescue, fieldbeam grass but also ryegrass. These grasses have a rapid germination with dense sod. Very handy so that the ball keeps rolling and does not end up in all sorts of cracks.
What it's all about in the end is the hole that the golf ball needs to be in. Around the hole is the green. Here the grass must have dense sod and above all can withstand the drought. It's here where we find the Ostrich Grass. Between the short cut Ostrich grass lies the Valhalla of every golfer (especially if the ball goes in with one stroke, the so-called hole-in-one). We can't afford the ball to end up in the rough (Yes, we learn English along the way), the tall sheep grass along the golf course, because then we'll be slapping (and swearing) before we get that misery behind us. If you already find your ball.
In the Leijpark we find, among other grasses, the Ostrich grass. In the park it is not cut short, but it can grow into the height and form feathers. Because these plumes are reminiscent of the tail of an ostrich, the name Ostrich grass has been invented. Delicious to play golf, but the cows in the meadow are of no use to this little nutritious grass. They prefer to eat farmed ryegrasses, much tastier and more protein.
We let this grass, which used to be used to make braids or used as natural rope, grow well in our beloved park. I can't guarantee a putter never gets there, but the bird will ignore the Ostrich grass and fly to the thistles..
