Leij park 013

A walk through the Leijpark is a journey through many countries of the world. We've been in many places together, but never in Bulgaria, so let's do that today. The most popular garden plant in Bulgaria is a plant called “zdravets” there. The word means as much as “health,” and that's not strange. The essential oil (fragrance oil) that is simply lowers blood pressure, lowers blood sugar levels, relieves symptoms of indisposition and helps with insomnia and exhaustion. In addition, the oil also acts as an antidepressant. The oil is also used in the food industry and can be found in soft drinks, sauces and tea. Those who receive “zdravets” as a gift will receive a harbinger of happiness. This use is fully embedded in Bulgarian culture.
Now we know the zdravets too, but under a different name. First of all, it's a member of the large geranium family. Geraniums are not only those plants with red and white flowers behind which proverbially the ancients of days are hidden. None of that, geraniums come in wild form in all shapes and sizes.
A branch within the family are the storks basin. The seeds resemble the beak of a big bird and we Dutch think of the stork. Within the stork family we also find the heron beak with similar seeds, but a slightly different structure. To get to the Dutch name, we need to go from Bulgaria to England. There we find this plant under the name “rock cranesbill”. Rock is of course rock and 'cranesbill' is the crane's beak. Because we, especially in the past, have much more storks than cranes, we call 'zdravets' Rock Storks.
It is this stork beak that could offer a solution in the Leijpark, wherever we found her. There are plants with pink red flowers, dark purple and we found the white variant.
A hot item in the Leijpark has been parking cars on the tree mirrors for many years (unfortunately). The tree mirror is the space around a tree (the size of the crown) where water enters the ground to the roots. This room should be kept free, otherwise the tree will not get enough moisture. In addition, the weight of cars compresses the ground, causing damage to the roots and getting too little carbon dioxide in the tree, as no air can enter into dense soil. An ideal outcome is planting the tree mirrors with flowers. The Rock Stork beak loves to grow, but is obviously limited by the limit of the tree mirror. In fact, this stork can grow anywhere: in the sun, in the shade and even in dry conditions. And: people don't park their cars on top of flowers quickly. It could be a future music that a Bulgarian medicinal plant “heal” the Leij Park of cars on the tree mirrors. Only someone has to take the initiative to do so. So don't hesitate any longer and sow guerrilla that Rock Stork's Beak! Cars out, flowers in! Who Dare?
