“The breath of a baby sugared by frost”. See, that's another description for a plant that is quite aptly called “baby's breath' in England. We know the plant mainly from bridal bouquets. She has deteriorated sharply in the wild and has now been listed as very rare. We know her under a name that refers to her favourite place, this is on calcareous grounds: Gypsum's wort.
Gypsum's wort is in the top 10 favorite cut flowers. Not only in weddings, it is used frequently, but also as a flower among tulip, rose and chrysanthemum bouquets. So beautiful branch crystal-clear white Gypsum's wort among colored flowers always does well. However, there is another industry that uses this herb extensively, and that is the fur and leather goods industry. The roots of Gypsum's wort contain saponins, soap fabrics, to put it a little easier. When the roots are boil out, a lye is created from which a very soft detergent can be made. Cleans fur and leather goods. Not just in our country, but worldwide. With fur it will soon end in our country after 2024, as we will no longer be allowed to breed gems. But the leather goods industry is still very big, so Gipskwort will remain popular for a long time.
Similarly, the herb is in demand among people with an ornamental garden and the 'wild' plants that we sometimes encounter have come from gardens, through the seeds taken by the wind. Speaking of the wind: Imagine an old western film, with a ghost town, a gunman standing in front of the city's corrupt sheriff, weapons still in the holsters. To emphasize the feeling of desolarity again, directors of the time used so-called “tumbleweeds,” of those large, cork-dry round flowing bushes flowing over the dry prairie grass. There are several plants that form such tumbleweeds, and one of them is the Gypsum's Wort. When rolling, tumbleweeds (we call them steppe witches) release their seeds.
We don't wait for the winner of the game and go back to the Leijpark, where we find the Gypskwort. Here we find the “baby's breath” full of bloom, with countless little white flowers. Gypsum's wort is available in white and pink and despite its loveliness it is a very strong perennial (not a herb at all) that does well in gardens and therefore also in parks. And those who can't get enough of the Gypsum's wort, know that the plant is also very easy to dry. The dried Gypsum's wort can be processed into a wreath that you can enjoy endlessly. The Gypskwort in the Leijpark is now in bloom and does not need to be dried as far as we are concerned. The Leijpark does not need a wreath, because as the proverb says: Good wine does not need a wreath.
