Camouflage, there are many variants. The goal is to make yourself invisible to your environment and that can be both prey and enemy. Some animals have the same colors as their background, others look like a twig or a leaf and are so immersed in nature. But there is one more way: to change your behavior. This last phenomenon can be seen in the Leijpark and at the Strekspin.
This spider is quite inconspicuous in itself, but that's seen from our perspective. Birds and toads (to name a few predators) find the spiders a tasty snack. But they must be able to find the Strekspider.
The Strekspider likes to be near water; water attracts all kinds of flying insects. For example, mosquitoes need water to lay their eggs and will look for, preferably, still water as much as possible. Water that is more or less still, for example between the reeds or aquatic plants, is also interesting for mosquitoes and also for damselfly. So all kinds of things fly around here. Low in the reed makes the Strekspin its web. It's round like a wheel and yet the Strekspin is not a real wheelweb spin, but if we look at this purely evolutionary, they are close relatives of each other. Here between the reed palms or between the stems of some higher aquatic plants, the spider patiently waits in its web until the meal comes flying in. However, it is also much more visible here than at the very top of the reed. However: she has a trick. As soon as there is a treachery, then the spider, literally, stretches. She makes herself as long and thin as possible and suddenly she goes into the reed stalk behind her. An extremely effective disappearing trick; before the eyes of the attacker suddenly disappears. Because she has a yellow-brown color, the trick works better on reeds than on green aquatic plants, but of course it also depends on the vegetation. Even against a background that makes her less invisible she will show this trick. The advantage of getting so long and thin is the fact that they are masters in hide and seek, they can easily hide behind a blade of grass.
Because the Strekspider likes to stay at stagnant water, she has also put the water to her hand. Should a predator, despite all her hiding techniques, still have her in the skies, then she runs towards the water and as Jesus in his young years, she just runs over it! Her wide-apart legs make this possible. Handsome attacker who imitates her this.
When the spiders start to mate, the male with his poisonous jaws grabs the female's poison jaws. Purely to make sure she doesn't see him as prey and tries to bite him. She's much bigger than him, so that scenario is not unthinkable and even plausible. So hold on and meanwhile try to find a hole somewhere.
Once fertilized, the female lays between one hundred and two hundred eggs. She turns these eggs into a package that looks so nasty that it looks like bird droppings in everything. Camouflage starts at the Strekspin at a very young age. More effective can not rush.
In the Leijpark, the Strekspin plays hide-and-seek from spring to deep summer, but with some research you might also find one. But keep an eye on your surroundings, especially if you're chasing the spider. We can not emphasize it enough: Splash is water!
