Leijpark013 Big fox

A little ten years ago, this butterfly was acutely threatened with extinction in our country. Everywhere, even in the dunes where she appeared regularly, she disappeared, the cause unknown. In recent years, at most five specimens were counted in our country a year, until the population suddenly picked up a little again and there was even (possibly) there were butterflies that propagated here, rather than just having to deal with wanderers. The Leijpark also seems to play a role in the return of the Big Fox. The butterfly, so named for its red-brown color, can be distinguished from the much more common little fox by the number of round spots on the upper wing. The little fox has three, the Big fox has four.
Today Henk de Winter picked this specimen for you, obviously a Big fox, in the Leijpark. How beautiful is it that a park in Tilburg can be a safe haven for such a beautiful creature, which has fluttered so close to the abyss and is now on the rise again? We can be quite proud of that!
