The ride needle. The word sounds like a craft tool that has fallen into oblivion, but nothing is less true. The trip needle is a problem, a big problem for many farmers. Agriculture in our country is already under attack because there is almost only a monoculture using a large arsenal of chemical control, but there are also real threats to which no adequate response has yet been found and one of these threats is the ride needle. What is it then? The ride needle is an insect, more precisely a larva that lives underground and drills holes in the roots and stems of crops. Chicory, potato, onion, grain, beets and many more crops suffer harm and with it, the farmers. Before the larvae mature, they can live in the soil between three and five years and cause untold damage.. In order to protect crops while not ruining the world with chemical, toxic pesticides, so-called 'biostimulants' are increasingly being used.. These are means that strengthen the resilience of plants. They do not kill the attacker, but make the plant and the soil stronger. A great way to combat riding needles while working for a healthier environment.
What does all this have to do with the Leijpark? In the Leijpark we encounter the adult animal: the cliptor. Clipping torren are beetles that may fly, but not off position. First they climb to the top of a turf or flower and there they spread the cover shields, so that the delicate wings come out underneath. However, the thing is that clippers are on the menu of birds. As soon as they are attacked by a bird and they are not able to immediately go on the wings, they drop like a brick. This entails a risk; they can end up on their backs and then they are completely helpless and vulnerable. For this scenario, the cliptor has developed a unique mechanism for. The beetle has a number of knurls on the edges between the chest and the rear. On his stomach he has a kind of recess that fits a pin that comes from his chest.. By tightening his muscles between the chest and the rear, pressure is placed on this pin, and with enough tension, the body nods up and the beetle is torpedoed by itself, into the air. The beetle repeats this trick until it lands on its feet again. Because this nodding of the beetle body is accompanied by a blink sound, as if someone snaps his fingers, they started to call him a cliptor. A fundamentally simple trick that will save the beetle several times.
Now there are many types of cutters and the species we found in the Leijpark is the Roodaarskniptor, a common beetle in our country. A specialist who does something no other family in the insect kingdom does. Every species knows a beauty, a specialty or a box of tricks. Sometimes it bothers us, often we can marvel at all those antics that take animals and plants out to survive. In the Leijpark they meet like in a green circus in which they are clown, acrobat and even spectators. We are certainly spectators and for such a circus, I would like to pay a ticket. You also?
