Leijpark013 Gamma owl

No one will have noticed that there are few butterflies this year. But little does not mean that there are no butterflies at all and one species that is now often seen is the so-called Gamma owl. The owl family is a large group of moths. The word gamma refers to the silvery white spots on the front wings, which look like the third letter of the Greek alphabet, gamma. The butterfly used to have a different name, namely 'pistol' because they thought they saw a gun in the same white spot at the time.
The gamma owls that we see now, including in the Leijpark, came here from much warmer regions last month. Butterflies that, like some birds, stay elsewhere where it is warmer than here in the winter are called migratory moths. It is impossible for the Gamma owl to overwinter in our country, it gets far too cold for that. The butterflies that now fly around here will mate, lay eggs and die. They are their descendants who, once pupated into butterflies, will return to the Mediterranean and North Africa. During their hike, the butterflies make smart use of the wind. They often change heights, so they always have the most favourable wind behind their wings. In doing so, they sometimes reach speeds of up to ninety kilometers per hour!
Just about all plants that now give off nectar are visited by this butterfly; an important pollinator for the Leijpark, so. So let it fly; now that the colorful species are not there (anymore), we will have to make do with some less colorful ones. It's just a matter of rethinking.
