#lgbtq Below we tell you about the history and meaning of the LGBT flag, as well as other groups such as bisexuals, lesbians and transgender people identify.
LGBT Pride
The famous rainbow flag was created in San Francisco by artist and activist Gilbert Baker in the late 70s, although it has been modified over the years.
Before this design existed, LGBT movements used a pink triangle, which is what Hitler used during World War II to mark homosexuals in concentration camps.
As groups grew, emphasis was placed on the need to create a new symbol to identify the community. Activist Harvey Milk was preparing for the March for Gay Freedom Day, to be held on June 25, 1978. He came with Baker to present a proposal.
The original design had eight colors: pink, red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue and purple.
When Harvey Milk was killed on November 27, demand for flags increased and textile companies did not have enough pink fabrics, so this color was removed.
A few months later, the flag began to be placed on the San Francisco banners vertically, but the light from the poles was confused with turquoise, so it was decided to remove another color and since 1979 it was placed in six stripes.
What does it mean?
Some people think that the bands of the gay flag represent each of the sexual orientations, but Baker thought of it as follows:
Rosa: sexuality
red: life
Orange: health
Yellow: Sunlight
Green: nature
Turquoise: magic and art
blue: serenity
Purple: Spirituality
A subset of flags represents other sexualities in the spectrum, such as bisexual, pansexual and asexual. #lgbtq
