Licorice ROOT: Is it so healthy?

#ZOETHOUT 😍 Licorice is commercially the designation for short pieces of the #wortelstok of Glycyrrhiza glabra, a plant that originates in Eurasia, North Africa and West Asia. Meanwhile, the non-endangered plant can be found worldwide. The plant contains a sweetener that is about 30 to 50 times as strong as sugar, but does not harm the teeth. It has to be chewed and sucked to taste the sweetener. Nevertheless, licorice — especially by children — was appreciated before the #snoepindustrie took over this market with much easier to consume products.
The juice from the root is used as #grondstof for licorice, possibly along with the salt salmiak.
The sweetener in licorice is glycyrrizic acid. This is a substance that increases blood pressure. Both licorice and licorice, this effect has been described and can lead to clinically significant #hypertensie (high blood pressure).
To licorice root medicinal properties are attributed, and the root is used for the preparation of herbal teas.
