People ignore advice and permanently damage their hearing while listening to loud music on headphones, an audiologist warned. William Shapiro, clinical associate professor at New York University Langone, says young people are particularly at risk. He says one in five teenagers has some form of hearing loss due to noise exposure.

If hair cells are damaged in any way, we suffer from permanent hearing loss or balance degeneration. In each ear, the inner ear structure, which is called the cochlea and which receives sound in the form of vibration, has 15,000 hairs. These small, sensory hair cells are crucial to help us detect sound waves, but they are also very fragile. The hair cells do not regenerate, so damage is permanent and a common cause in people with certain types of hearing loss.
