El carnaval comienza con la coronación de la reina del carnaval, seguida por una serie de desfiles y eventos culturales en los que participan grupos de danza y música folclórica, cumbia, porro y vallenato. También hay desfiles de disfraces, llamados "barranquilleros", que se realizan en diferentes barrios de la ciudad.
El Carnaval de Barranquilla culmina con el entierro de Joselito Carnaval, un personaje ficticio que representa el final de la fiesta y el inicio de la Cuaresma. Los Carnavales de Barranquilla son una expresión de la identidad cultural y la diversidad de Colombia y son una oportunidad para que los visitantes experimenten la alegría y la hospitalidad de la gente de la región caribeña del país.
