Scottish physicist, mathematician and inventor. His father was a professor of mathematics at the University of Glasgow, making it easier for him to start his university studies at the age of 10. At 16 he had already published his first scientific article. Also at the University of Glasgow, where he worked for more than 50 years, he created the first physics laboratory in the United Kingdom. He was a pioneer in the fields of electromagnetism and thermodynamics.
In the latter he established the Kelvin absolute temperature scale and the Second Law of Thermodynamics. He played a decisive role in the commissioning of underwater cable telegraphy, so he was named a knight and in 1892 he received the title of Baron Kelvin.
