THE WISE MEN

Who Were They?

Melchor, Gaspar and Balthazar were the three wise men who came from distant lands to deliver rich gifts like gold, incense and myrrh, to pay tribute to the king of kings: Jesus of Nazareth. They were considered to be monarchs from nations from the East to the Mediterranean, being powerful, wise and noble men, since the Bible gospels do not indicate details about these Magi who came to worship Jesus. According to ancient physical representations of the magicians, they were shown by Persian entrances, holding the offerings with their hands covered by their mantles. From the 9th century onwards they were represented as Kings, with crowns adorning their heads.

What was the origin of Three Kings Day?

According to the scriptures of the Bible in the Gospel according to Matthew (chapter 2, verses 1 to 12) indicates that the Magi went through Jerusalem to see Herod and ask him about the “King of the Jews” who had just been born, led by a star in heaven:

“Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the time of King Herod, some magi who came from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the King of the Jews who was born? For we saw his star in the East and we have come to worship him”.

From the 19th century onwards, the tradition of giving gifts to children began in Spain on the night of Kings (night before Epiphany). In 1866, the first Three Kings Parade was held in Alcoy, whose tradition extended to the rest of the country, and this tradition was adopted in other countries of Hispanic culture.
