#traveling Five little houses lie on the waters of a gigantic lake that, after another day of burning sun, falls asleep serene and warm.

Without a vestige of modernity for miles, soon darkness devours the entire horizon. Then, out of nowhere comes arbitrary, unpredictable, a natural phenomenon unprecedented in the world, capable of turning midnight into the day with a blinding burst of flashes that, in a second, illuminates everything like a cosmic neon lighthouse.

Time and again, again and again: more than a million rays every year, weather activity that, in addition to being an impressive visual spectacle, regenerates 10 percent of our painful ozone layer. Despite the fury of the elements, silence reigns: it is like a silent storm that eventually lets out a dry rumor like the growl of a sleeping cyclops.

However, this is not an excerpt from fiction, but a real event that takes place every night on the outskirts of Lake Maracaibo, in western Venezuela, and which bears the name, like the pompous title of some novel by Verne: The Lightning of the Catatumbo.

The phenomenon is located in Venezuela, in the Ciénegas National Park of Juan Manuel de Aguas Claras and Aguas Negras. It can be seen hundreds of kilometers away, however, the best viewpoint is south of Lake Maracaibo, in Puerto Chamita, where there are palafitos to accommodate tourists.

To get there are flights from major Latin American cities; American Airlines, Taca, Avianca and Aeromexico fly to Caracas. From Caracas one goes to Mérida by bus (16 hours), or by plane to El Vigia, and from there bus to Mérida (one hour).
